Labour executive to decide on leadership contest rules

He shares Jeremy Corbyn's anti-austerity policies, but he will still find it tough to win over the party members.

A second candidate joined the race today to try to unseat Britain's embattled opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Despite a civil war raging within the Party since the historic European Union referendum vote, Mr Corbyn has resisted attempts - and insisted from the outset he would stand again the event of a leadership content.

Johanna Baxter said a number of NEC members at a meeting on Tuesday to determine if Mr Corbyn should automatically appear on the leadership ballot had faced bullying.

"All other leadership candidates will require nominations from 20 percent of the PLP and EPLP", the spokesperson added.

Brexit leader Boris Johnson appointed UK foreign minister
George Osborne , whose career was inextricably linked with Mr Cameron's fortunes, has left government amid claims he was sacked. After the flurry of appointments within hours of May taking office further announcements are expected later this week.

The incident follows repeated complaints by Labour MPs - particularly women - that they have been subjected to threats and abuse from Mr Corbyn's supporters if they speak out against the party leader.

Iain McNicol, the party's general secretary, had sought legal advice over the interpretation of a key paragraph of the rules for electing a Labour leader, which were revised by Ed Miliband.

The timetable for the contest will be published on Thursday but reports suggest it will run well into September.

Former shadow work and pensions secretary Owen Smith has joined the Wallasey MP in seeking to unseat veteran left-winger Jeremy Corbyn, declaring he would be a "radical and credible" leader who could take Labour back into power.

Mr Corbyn issued a statement calling for calm, urging party members to treat each other with "respect and dignity" insisting that there was no place for violence in politics.

But Ms Eagle urged his opponents to take advantage of rules that mean they have two days next week to become registered supporters, a one-off status that gives them a vote, if they pay £25.

"I would hope there isn't going to be a legal challenge".

In a secret ballot, 18 NEC committee members chose to put him on the ballot automatically, while 14 said he should have to get the required nominations.

John McTernan, Tony Blair's former director of political operations, told Sky News that trade unions who voted with Mr Corbyn had "stabbed the party in the heart". I think we now need a real debate about the future direction of our party.
