Tesla urged to disable automatic steering after fatal crash

A leading consumer advocacy group has called on Tesla to pull its controversial Autopilot feature from vehicles and change its "misleading" name, following the death of a driver using the beta feature.

While the exact cause of the fatal accident is not yet known, the incident has caused safety advocates, including Consumer Reports, to question whether the name Autopilot, as well as the marketing hype of its roll-out, promoted a dangerously premature assumption that the Model S was capable of truly driving on its own.

Consumer Reports said it wants Tesla to require drivers to keep their hands on the wheel as part of an updated driver-assist system.

The electric carmaker is already facing a preliminary evaluation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the performance of its Autopilot system due to the fatal crash.

"We're deeply concerned that consumers are being sold a pile of promises about unproven technology".

Man exchanges gunfire with Georgia police officer
Charges against Beck were still pending Friday afternoon as he was being treated at a Florida hospital, Dutton said. The officer encountered a male in the parking lot and gunfire was exchanged between the two, Mathews says.

The Palo Alto, Calif. -based company also gave no indication that it plans to rename the system, which comes with a warning that drivers should still keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

Musk, around the same time Reuters reported on the letter late Thursday, sent out a tweet saying the Autopilot mode was turned off when a Tesla Model X crashed on a Pennsylvania turnpike on July 1, injuring both passengers.

"We will continue to develop, validate, and release those enhancements as the technology grows".

"Our coalition was founded with the express objective of increasing road safety and dramatically reducing the over 35,000 road fatalities that occur in the USA each year", said David Strickland, counsel for the Self Driving Coalition for Safer Streets. In addition.it says the name Autopilot is "misleading and potentially unsafe".

Tesla vehicle company has come under increasing scrutiny following a crash of one of its electric cars while using the controversial autopilot service.

"Consumers should never be guinea pigs for vehicle safety "beta" programs", said Ms. MacCleery.

The accident is the first known fatality in just over 130 million miles where Autopilot was activated, in contrast to a fatality every 94 million miles among all vehicles in the USA, according to Tesla.

Model S vehicles have driven 130 million miles on Autopilot with one confirmed fatality.

"Given the potential of vehicle safety technologies to decrease traffic accidents and fatalities, I am also interested in Tesla's work to educate customers on the use, benefits, and limitations of the technology", Thune wrote. The Senate Committee expects Tesla CEO, Elon Musk to share details about the company's autopilot feature.

Consumer Reports has cited the "handoff problem" in its argument that the technology is not ready for public use, as it takes time for people to reengage in tasks as sophisticated as driving after disengaging for a period.
