Mets' place Steven Matz on the DL with shoulder injury

Young Mets left-hander Steven Matz is said to have a "mild" shoulder strain and some issues with rotator cuff irritation, but no structural damage in his left shoulder, following an exam by team doctors, people familiar with the situation said.

Citing people familiar with the situation, Jon Heyman of Today's Knuckleball and WFAN reported that Matz's exam and MRI on Monday in NY did not reveal any structural damage.

To fill the spot on the roster, the Mets have called up RHP Robert Gsellman from Las Vegas.

According to Fox Sports, Gsellman will begin his Major League Baseball career pitching out of bullpen - at least initially.

Florida: 5 new Zika cases including 1 in the Tampa Bay area
Zika can cause severe brain-related birth defects, including a dangerously small head, if women are infected during pregnancy. State and federal health officialssay mosquitoes are spreading Zika in two neighborhoods of Miami, including Miami Beach.

Matz indicated Thursday he was not too anxious about the injury, and told the Bergen Record he felt fine after playing catch Saturday afternoon at AT&T; Park.

Matz was scratched from his last scheduled start against the Giants this past weekend and had been hopeful he would avoid the disabled list.

Lugo is slated to start for Matz on Thursday, and it will be his second start in the majors.

The Mets announced on Friday that Matz would skip a start with shoulder discomfort after feeling a twinge in side sessions. "There's some discomfort in there".

Hoy leads praise of record-breaker Wiggins
In the men's four, Sbihi, Nash, Louloudis and London 2012 victor Gregory beat Australia in a time of five minutes 58.61 seconds. Kenny then stepped up to steal the first seed ahead of the final with a time of 9.551 on another dramatic night at Rio 2016.

As for Matz, the Daily News reports that he has been receiving shots of painkillers before his starts to combat the discomfort. I think you go through stuff all the time throughout a season, but it didn't respond the way I'd like it to.

Matz, who flew back to NY for the exam and MRI, has pitched for three months after a large elbow spur was discovered, and endured it despite mostly shelving a slider that seems to cause the pain.

Matz could return during the upcoming four-game series against the Marlins, but if he has to miss time it puts the burden on Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Bartolo Colon to produce quality outings each time out.

Steven Matz has pitched most of this season with a painful bone spur in his left elbow.

The alligator bit the woman when she was trying to retrieve a dropped can from the water, he added. She was flown to Broward Health North Trauma Center, where she was in critical condition.

Since the beginning of July, the Mets have won just two of Matz's eight starts, and the lefty has allowed 19 earned runs in 50.1 innings over that span for a 3.41 ERA.
