IMD predicts above normal monsoon
Two straight years of drought in India - for only the fourth time in over a century - have sparked anger among farmers against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In what will come as a huge relief for our drought-stricken country, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Thursday, said that there is zero percent probability of deficient monsoon this year.
The IMD said that the northwest region of the country will receive above normal rainfall, and central India and the southern peninsula region will receive excess rainfall.

"Once the onset over Kerala takes place, the progress of the monsoon will be speedy", he said, adding that according to the weather office calculations "there was 0% probability of deficient rainfall".
Kerala is receiving a good patchy pre-monsoon rainfall.
Monsoon has set in over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and conditions were favourable for its advance over Kerala in the next four to five days, Laxman Singh Rathore, director general, IMD told reporters here.

The weather analysts had predicted monsoon would reach Mumbai and parts of West Bengal between June 12 to 14.
Skymet, a private weather forecasting agency, has said it "appears" that monsoon has hit the Kerala coast.

A normal or excess rainfall would doubtless boost the country's kharif crops (paddy, pulses, cotton and oilseeds), besides ensuring sufficient soil moisture for the next rabi crops (wheat, pulses and oilseeds). There was normal rain for seven years and only one year witnessed below normal rain. "We can hope for good rains this year", an IMD official said.
