Firefighters had the Davis Fire about 25 miles northwest of Helena 50-percent contained as of Tuesday morning. About 2,015 acres had been burned, according to U.S. Forest Service officials, and about 466 people were working on it.

The Helena City Commission voted Monday night to raise city water rates and solid waste disposal rates by 5 percent this fall and wastewater rates by 4 percent. The city’s Public Works Department had recommended increases somewhat higher than that, but the commissioners agreed to keep them a bit lower because of the economy.

The Helena Ranger District will temporarily close three roads in the Tenmile area this week to accommodate trucks hauling mine waste. The clean-up activities being conducted by contractors of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

After a month-long delay while more downtown property owners were sought as members, the Helena City Commission unanimously agreed Monday night to renew the charter of Downtown Helena, Inc., for another 10 years.

The 2012 gubernatorial campaign has started with the recent announcements of two Republican candidates for that office. Former State Sens. Ken Miller of Laurel and Corey Stapleton of Billings say they will run for the GOP nomination to replace two-term Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer, who can’t run again because of term limits.

Due to a six-figure budget deficit, Helena City Commission decided Monday night to cut one position each from the police and fire departments and eliminate the downtown trolley but to retain water meters at two city parks for community gardens.

Officials with the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife & Parks are recommending expanding to 186 the number of wolves allowed to be killed this season. The wolf hunt quota was 75 last year (73 were killed). This does not include any individual animals killed by FWP officials called in by complaints about the animals attacking livestock.

A legislative committee is meeting this week to decide whether and how to move forward with 11 proposals aimed at curbing impaired driving. It also will decide whether to sponsor a 12th bill that would require biological evidence for DNA analysis to be preserved longer in certain criminal cases.

Mine reclamation specialists with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality recently teamed up with staff members from the City of Helena Parks and Recreation Department to close off two adits near a popular local hiking trail.

The Helena City Commission got an earful Monday night from those who support community gardens and don’t want to see $9,000 cut from the budget for water meters in the new Selma Held and Janet Street parks.
