Thinning underway on Mount Helena

A second thinning project of pine beetle-killed trees on Mount Helena started earlier this week involving a two-acre piece of ground near the 1906 Trail, which will be closed for about 10 days as a result.

Retail gasoline prices inching back up

Average retail gasoline prices in Montana have risen more than three cents per gallon in the past week, averaging $2.723 per gallon as of Tuesday. This compares with the national average, which has fallen 2.9 cents per gallon in the past week to $2.714 per gallon, according to the gasoline price Web site at MontanaGasPrices.com.

Congress extends unemployment benefits

The Emergency Unemployment Compensation program (EUC08), which would have expired on Dec. 31, 2009, has been extended to Feb. 28 with the passage by Congress of HR 3326. This provision allows people whose regular Montana unemployment claim runs out between now and the end of February to begin receiving the emergency benefits. It also allows claimants who already receiving emergency benefits to access the next tier of the program. Because the extension is federally funded, there is no cost to employers.

New state, city officials sworn into office

New Helena City Commissioners Dan Ellison and Dick Thweatt were sworn into office Monday, Jan. 4, by City Judge Bob Wood. Their first official meeting will be an administrative one on Wednesday, Jan. 6, and their first full commission meeting will be on Monday, Jan. 11.

Senate funds VA clinic, Custer Interchange

The U.S. Senate has approved a bill including funding to expand the Troop Medical Clinic at Fort Harrison and encourage development of the long-awaited Custer Avenue Interchange. The president still must approve the bill.

Indian trust account case finally settled

The federal government announced Tuesday that the 13-year-old case filed by a Blackfeet banker against the Department of Interior has been settled. The agreement in Cobell, et al, v. Salazar, et al, provides for a $1.4-billion fund to be distributed among more than 300,000 individual Native Americans and $2 billion for potential purchase and consolidation of certain land interests.

Townsend, Boulder projects get grants

The Rocky Mountain Development Council (RMDC) has had two of affordable housing projects approved for HOME grant funds by the Montana Department of Commerce. These Home Investment Partnerships (HOME) Program dollars were awarded competitively to expand the supply of affordable housing for low- and very low-income people.

City commission annexes fairgrounds area

The Helena City Commission voted Monday night to annex more than 220 acres on Helena’s northwest boundary into the city. Those acres include the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, the Woodlawn-Dunbar neighborhood, and the Laborers Union training facility on Horseshoe Bend Road.
