Bronx landlord accused of stabbing tenant over unpaid rent

Dhaka - A Bangladeshi businessman was stabbed to death in front of his home in NY, media reports said quoting officials in the United States on Thursday.

Taha Mahran, 51, repeatedly stabbed Zakir Khan, 44, in the torso in their building at 1001 Logan Ave., near Barkley Avenue, about 6:30 pm, the police said.

Zakir Khan was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center but it was too late.

Khan was stabbed to death Wednesday evening, February 22, by Taha Mahran outside Mahran's Throgs Neck house where Khan rented an apartment for his family. When officers arrived, they found 44-year-old Zakir Khan with multiple stab wounds, according to the NYPD.

According to published reports, after the attack Mahran, covered in blood, walked into the 45th Precinct station house two blocks away from the crime scene. Court records indicate Maharan was trying to have Khan evicted from the property over unpaid rent dating back nine months. Khan had three young children.

He stopped paying rent when he fell on hard times and was forced to close his real estate office, it said.

Sepulveda said he knew Mahran as well and described him as "generally a peaceful man, whose violent act was totally out of character".
