On a day that White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer assured the press corps that mass deportations would not become the norm in handling USA immigration issues, the Department of Homeland Security issued a pair of interrelated memos that broaden the power of federal immigration agents and add teeth to President Donald Trump's executive orders on immigration.
Except that whereas the Obama administration - which deported hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants - put a priority on those who had committed felonies or other serious crimes, the new orders make it plain that virtually all undocumented immigrants are at risk.
The DHS plans to hire an extra 10,000 agents for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and 5,000 more border patrol officers to enforce the new guidance.
The guidance clearly states that except for people in the DACA and DAPA program, DHS will no longer exempt entire classes or categories of removable aliens from potential deportation.
New policies aimed at stemming the flow of illegal immigration will be implemented, that will "facilitate the detection, apprehension, detention and removal" of undocumented immigrants "who have no lawful basis to enter or remain in the United States".
The agency also plans to send non-Mexican migrants crossing the southern United States border back into Mexico as they await a decision on their case.
The Department of Homeland Security has not denied the existence of the memos but has not provided further details.
Parents and other adults who helped children immigrate to the USA without documents could also be subjected to deportation or prosecution under these mandates, reportsThe Hill.
The DHS directives expand expedited deportations to those who have been here two years or less who are arrested anywhere in the country.
"Is one of the goals here mass deportation?" a reporter asked him.
Immigrant advocate and attorney Patrick Young says the new deportation guidelines are frightening and unnecessary.
The memo also instructs agents to expedite removal processes for undocumented immigrants detained at the border, a departure from the Obama administration's legal procedures which provided some due process.
