Red Wings, Tigers owner quietly paid Rosa Parks' rent for 10 years

Parks moved to Detroit in 1957, two years after she famously refused to give up her seat on a public bus to a white male passenger in Montgomery, Alabama.

And one of his friends wants the world to know that the businessman spent 11 years secretly helping a civil rights icon after she needed a new home.

Late last week Mike Ilitch, owner of the Detroit Tigers and the NHL's Detroit Red Wings, passed away at the age of 87.

He added that it's especially heartbreaking because of the recent struggles of the Tigers and the Wings; but he's grateful for the legacy Ilitch has left behind. "It's just, it's just great to see all these people down here". Ilitch is survived by his wife, seven children, 22 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

"My father was a once-in-a-generation entrepreneur, visionary and leader, setting the tone for our organization and our family", said Christopher Ilitch. After a stint as a door-to-door salesman, in 1959 he started a pizza business that later grew into a nationwide restaurant chain. "We wanted to thank him for giving so much to the fans". Visitation hours are from noon to 8 p.m.
