Snapchat turns to Lenses to capture advertising revenue

The ephemeral mobile storytelling app is going public, a move that will raise $3 billion and open up the books of the secretive company. That offering, in 2014, raised nearly $22 billion.

Snap is said to be working on a collection of "smarter lenses" that would let users overlay virtual images and objects onto landscapes in the real world, "not just faces", and let them interact with the virtual objects similar to augmented reality (via The Information). According to Nielsen data cited by the companies, Snapchat reaches 41% of all adults ages 18-34 in the US on an average day, while the global audience for Snapchat Discover tops 150 million daily.

"We believe that reinventing the camera represents our greatest opportunity to improve the way that people live and communicate", the company said in its filing.

Snap Inc.'s revenue has grown at a much steeper rate than its flagship app's daily user base.

GOP Senators Warn Trump Against Lifting Sanctions on Russian Federation
Relations between Russian Federation and the West countries have deteriorated in 2014 in connection with the situation in Ukraine. If Trump's going to end that punishment, Russian Federation should make a "unilateral" concession or concessions of its own.

Terms of the deal were not set because this is the initial filing. Class B shareholders have one vote per share and Class C shareholders have 10 votes per share.

Looking ahead, eMarketer projects that Snapchat will generate $935.5 million in worldwide ad revenue this year, an increase of 155% over last year.

Adding, "We can not predict whether this structure and the concentrated control it affords [CEO Evan] Spiegel and [co-founder and CTO Robert] Murphy will result in a lower trading price or greater fluctuations in the trading price of our Class A common stock as compared to the trading price if the Class A common stock had voting rights".

We're getting a Snapchat IPO in 2017 after all.
