Senate moves toward confirmation of billionaire opponent of public schools

As the former head of the Republican Party in Michigan, DeVos has been involved in education reform for decades, notably pushing for charter schools in the state. Hoene and Graham's resolution also says, "Betsy DeVos has a troubling history of financially supporting organizations whose actions are detrimental to LGBTQ students". "Her whole career has been school choice to the exclusion of the basic public education system, and I am just such a firm believer in public education that I can't go that far". There are also lawsuits filed by Gov. Cooper and the State Board of Education that seek to overturn two laws that, if they are upheld, will limit the power of the new governor and significantly shift responsibility over education policy from the State Board of Education to the new State Superintendent of Public Instruction.

It's no secret that President Donald Trump's cabinet nominations have been on the controversial side.

Kasich endorsed DeVos on Tuesday in a letter to the chairman of the Senate's education and health committee, which will vote on her nomination.

During her confirmation hearing with the U.S. Senate, she dedicated herself to being a champion for great schools.

These states would get hurt most in a Trump trade war
Such a measure could affect Mexico's exports to the United States, its top trading partner. Trump was expected to meet with Nieto Jan. 31.

Since DeVos has neither education experience nor experience in political office, her supposed qualifications for the position must come from the policy work she has done for educational advocacy groups.

Ms. DeVos does not support the equal rights of students with disabilities to receive a Free and Appropriate Public Education as outlined in IDEA. The NEA's coalition was formidable and included almost every association and union formed by public school officials and employees.

Her confirmation hearing showed that she simply has no knowledge of the complex inner workings of our education system. This makes sense since the NEA has, since the creation of the U.S. Department of Education in 1979, believed that the agency is a wholly owned subsidiary of the union and, as such, the cabinet secretary should acquiesce to the union's agenda.

Perhaps most surprising of all was DeVos' failure to discuss her opinion of Title 1, the vitally important mechanism by which the federal government provides financial support to benefit the nation's poorest students.

"As someone who has been married to a special education teacher for nearly 50 years and has also served as chairman of the Georgia Board of Education, the education of kids with disabilities has been a passion of mine for decades", Isakson said in a statement.

The grand-standing of the Democrats as the defenders of public education, however, is completely fraudulent. Are we going to see more competitive charter schools across the nation?

"This idea is hardly new, and it's hardly subversive", yet it's " what Senate Democrats are so busy criticizing Betsy DeVos about", he said. In Florida, almost 60 percent of children in public schools qualify for either free- or reduced-price lunch programs.

Hopson began by saying DeVos doesn't know the difference between "growth", how much students improve, and "proficiency", how many students meet a certain standard - a common education debate on how to best measure students' progress. Introducing competition into education means that schools no longer have captive customers-if a school is not doing a good job, students can pick up and take their money elsewhere.
