Replete with stunning national parks, affordable housing and a booming economy, Utah just saw its population topple the 3-million mark.

With a recent release of population numbers on Monday, the state's population has grown to 39.4 million by adding an additional 295,000 people between July 1, 2015, and July 1, 2016.

NY still remained the fourth most populous state in the nation, behind California, Texas and Florida.

Meanwhile, the nation's population was estimated at 323.1 million on July 1, 2016, the census bureau said.

By nearly every metric, Illinois' population will continue to sharply decline in the coming years as more residents call it quits on the state they call home. IL had only the second-greatest decline rate in 2016, however, as even with the population drop it continues to be the fifth-most populous state.

The new figure is about 100,000 more than 2010. The natural growth rate is calculated by taking the number of births in the state and subtracting the number of deaths.
