Uber Launches Self-Driving Cars In California, Over State's Objections

The company yesterday launched a fleet of the self-driving cars onto the streets of San Francisco - but the state DMV ordered the firm to stop the trial straight away.

Consumer Watchdog, a California advocacy group, is urging even tougher action against Uber, saying San Francisco police should impound Uber's robot cars.

However, the San Francisco launch is facing additional problems as officials claim the company requires an additional permit to operate the self-driving cars in the city.

In a declaration on its website, Uber replied that it did not require the permit, as its cars require a person to constantly monitor and take control of the wheel, which is not meeting the definition of autonomous. The screen also shows you a simplified version of what the autonomous auto itself 'sees, ' displaying on a white background color-coded point- and line-based rudimentary versions of the objects and the world surrounding the vehicle.

Uber has launched its self-driving vehicle taxi service in San Francisco, just a few months after announcing the service in its hometown of Pittsburgh. The vehicles are manned by a test driver, according to the company.

Though the cars are tricked out with sensors so they can steer, accelerate and brake, and even decide to change lanes, Uber says they are not almost good enough to drive without human monitoring.

Getting a permit for prototype testing is part of a process intensely negotiated between the state and industry, and DMV lawyer Soublet argued in an interview that the permits helps maintain public confidence that the technology is safe.

However, the company immediately ran afoul of state Department of Motor Vehicles officials, who said the company had failed to obtain an autonomous vehicle-testing permit as required by state law.

According to Anthony Levandowski, the leader of Uber's self-driving program, Uber's cars aren't advanced enough to drive themselves without human monitoring.

"Any action by Uber to continue the operation of vehicles equipped with autonomous technology on public streets in California must cease until Uber complies", he wrote, suggesting that failure to comply will lead to legal action, including an attempt to ban Uber from operating self-driving cars in the state. All that information is public.
