Yet the salary stand-off was threatening to become as fractious as the chaotic relations onscreen between the Gallagher family in Shameless, which is one of the jewel's in Showtime's crown along with The Affair and Homeland.

Producers WBTV and Showtime did not immediately return THR's request for comment on her contract status or the show's official renewal, which Rossum indicated in her tweet.

In Season 1, it made sense for Macy to be paid more than a cast of relative unknowns. Even Macy had nothing but respect for Rossum standing strong during her pay negotiations.

Macy told TMZ he approved of Rossum's demands, saying "It's about f*cking time, don't you think?"

While Macy began the series as the show's most high profile star, Rossum, who starred in all 84 episodes, quickly received critical recognition, nabbing three Critic Choice Awards nods for her role. Yes, Macy came into the show with more experience, but Rossum emerged as the clear lead in a show that is at the center of Showtime's lineup way back in Season 2.
