Rosberg: Abu Dhabi was my toughest race

Nico Rosberg lost a race and won a Formula One world championship on Sunday and a weight of history slipped from his shoulders as the tears flowed and a night of partying stretched out before him.

Hamilton started the race knowing he would need to win, while hoping Rosberg failed to finish on the podium and his lack of pace was created to open up opportunities for Ferrari and Red Bull to put pressure on his colleague.

But the title battle hung in the balance until the very closing stages of the race as Hamilton desperately attempted to back his Mercedes team-mate into the clutches of the chasing pack.

However, a spokesman for the team made it clear there would be no knee-jerk reaction. Which is what Lewis Hamilton tried to do, although he clearly didn't drive quite slowly enough.

"Two Rosbergs are world champions. if I've got my statistics right", Rosberg said jokingly, before recounting how his father has adopted a keen but discreet profile.

Rosberg didn't directly criticize Hamilton's tactics, saying he understood that it was the British driver's best chance.

"It might have been intense for you [watching] but it wasn't for me".

"We had won the constructors' championship so it was down to me and Nico today". But Rosberg had entered the race 12 points ahead of Hamilton in the standings, meaning a podium finish would secure the title regardless of Hamilton's performance.

"I don't think I didn't anything risky today".

While Sebastian Vettel eventually took over as Rosberg's closest threat at the end, Verstappen completed his one-stop strategy to take fourth place.

"I knew I was going to come under attack from the two-stop guys as they obviously had more life left in the tyres, I don't think I could have held Seb off at the end".

"I am very pleased with my result and how that race went", said the Dutchman.

According to Wolff, Mercedes will "look at the overall situation and say 'what does it mean?' Everything is possible". However, they felt they still needed to make comments.

Did you expect it to end any other way?

"He drove a tactical race and he didn't do anything dirty, he didn't do anything against the rules. World champion" when he crossed the line.

"It feels like I've been racing him forever and always he's just managed to edge me out and get the title even when we were small in go-karts", Rosberg told reporters in a news conference punctuated by emotional pauses. He did a fantastic job, congratulations to him.

The German driver focused on himself the whole season, not allowing the frustrations of his rivalry with Hamilton to unsettle him.
