Protesters against Aussie refugee treatment delay Parliament

Protesters who forced a suspension of yesterday's Question Time have again breached security at Parliament House.

Metres away on the ground, 13 more demonstrators held placards in a pond they dyed red to symbolise blood.

The group of about 40 activists shouted pro-refugee chants from the public viewing gallery of the House of Representatives as prime minister Malcolm Turnbull and other senior members of parliament sat for Question Time.

"All of the politicians are complicit, there's bipartisan support for the detention centres and the way people coming to Australia to seek safety and help are being treated".

United Nations special rapporteur Francois Crepeau this month said Australia's "punitive approach" to boatpeople had tarnished its human rights record following an 18-day mission that took him across the country and to Nauru.

"We are here today because your policies are breaking our hearts", one protester said.

Both major parties condemned the interruption.

Government Minister Christopher Pyne described the disruption as "the most serious intrusion into the Parliament" in 20 years and asked the speaker to investigate.

Opposition Leader Bill Shorten thanked security staff for their handling of the demonstration.

The protesters, from the Whistleblowers Activists and Citizens Alliance, said offshore detention represented a "state of emergency"."Parliament shutdown by @akaWACA #closethecamps #bringthemhere", the grassroots alliance said on Twitter.

However, Greens MP Adam Bandt praised the protesters for their actions.

Outrage and fear fuel continuing anti-Trump protests
The largely peaceful demonstrations were overshadowed by sporadic episodes of vandalism, violence and street-blocking. But in Portland, where police say Thursday's protest morphed into a riot , things turned violent for a second night.

The Australian Federal Police were quickly called to the scene of the protest, and Winoto expressed concern about some of her fellow activists who had been confronted by armed police.

The number of asylum seekers travelling to Australia by boat rose sharply in 2012 and early 2013. The policy is intended as a deterrent.

Everyone who arrives is detained.

The protesters say Manus Island, Nauru and Christmas Island are death camps and demanding every single person in offshore detention be evacuated immediately and the camps shut down.

The government has also adopted a policy of tow-backs, or turning boats around.
