Buzz Aldrin, second man on moon, evacuated from South Pole

The 86-year-old former U.S. fighter pilot and astronaut was on a trip to Antarctica when his condition deteriorated, according to the tourist company he was travelling with.

In a statement on their website, the tourist company White Desert confirmed that Mr Aldrin's evacuation had simply been a "precaution" after his condition had deteriorated.

"He now has fluid in his lungs but is responding well to antibiotics and being kept overnight for observation".

The National Science Foundation said it received request to evacuate him and dispatched a humanitarian medical flight to the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

Aldrin tweeted a number of photos earlier this week as he prepared to visit Antarctica.

Aldrin, Neil Armstrong and Michael Collins were the members of NASA's historic Apollo 11moon mission in July 1969. A live video allowed people on Earth to watch as he and Armstrong became the first two men to set foot on the moon's surface.

His manager Christina Korp, who travelled alongside the stricken former astronaut, described the ordeal as a "gruelling 24 hours" but said Aldrin was now recovering well in New Zealand.

The plane carrying Buzz Aldrin out of Antarctica has reached Christchurch, New Zealand. The NSF uses cargo planes equipped with landing skis, called LC-130s, and they are operated by the 109th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard.

Tour company White Desert sent its best wishes to Mr Aldrin.

Aldrin has crisscrossed the globe in recent months and years, pushing hard for human exploration of Mars and promoting space and science education.

White Desert specializes in Antarctic tours and has operated there for 10 years. According to a Twitter post by Aldrin, he departed for the South Pole on Tuesday (Nov. 29).

Knowing him, he'll probably be back at the South Pole as soon as doctors give him the go-ahead!
