Britain's populist UK Independence Party chose European Parliament member Paul Nuttall as leader on Monday, replacing the charismatic but divisive Nigel Farage.
Mr Nuttall defeated former deputy chairwoman Suzanne Evans and ex-soldier John Rees-Evans.
Ahead of the result being announced, Farage said without UKIP there would have been no referendum in June when 52 per cent of Britons voted to leave the EU.
New Ukip leader Paul Nuttall has set himself the aim of raising his party's share of the vote at the next general election as high as 30%.
The 39-year-old, who grew up and studied in the town, had been favourite to win the election and on Monday, November 28 it was announced that he will be replacing Nigel Farage.
Nuttall said UKIP, which only has one of the 650 seats in parliament, needed to use the momentum behind the shock Brexit vote to oust the Labour Party, now led by left-wing veteran Jeremy Corbyn, in many of its traditional working-class strongholds across the north of the country.
A Ukip north-west MEP, he claims he can bring the party together.
Other than that, Mr Farage said, he would combine being an MEP with a career in the media and a visit to the USA "as a tourist".
"They are more at home talking about the issues that swirl around the Islington dinner party than the issues that matter in working class communities", said Nuttall today.
Mr Farage promised not to be "a back seat driver", but said he would be available to offer support if asked.
At the same time, there may be an opportunity to woo pro-Brexit Labour supporters in the north of England who were unhappy with their party's campaign to remain.
Earlier, Farage said it had been a "difficult" summer for the party.
Outrage and fear fuel continuing anti-Trump protests
The largely peaceful demonstrations were overshadowed by sporadic episodes of vandalism, violence and street-blocking. But in Portland, where police say Thursday's protest morphed into a riot , things turned violent for a second night.
But more imminently, he was this week "going off to the United States of America - but you will understand, purely as a tourist".
Labour MP Stephen Kinnock, speaking on behalf of the pro-EU Open Britain campaign also reacted to Nuttal's victory by accusing the new Ukip leader of wanting to "privatise our NHS".
"In recent weeks, my relationship with the party has been increasingly hard and I feel it is now time to move on".
To enthusiastic applause from activists at the result announcement in Westminster, Mr Farage said that Ukip's achievements had helped pave the way for Donald Trump's victory in the USA election and were an "inspiration" to others around Europe who want their countries to leave the EU.
He said: "Donald Trump spoke about making America great again".
But a 2020 election where Brexit has yet to be delivered and with Labour hesitant on immigration, could be fruitful for Ukip.
