Order could have little effect on pipeline protest camp

Organizers of protests against construction of the Dakota Access oil pipeline speak at a news conference on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2016, near Cannon Ball, N.D. They said they have a right to remain on land where they have been camped for months.

It's another political setback for those fighting against the Dakota Access Pipeline and comes just one day after the United States Army Corps of Engineers said it would not forcibly remove people from the camp.

On Black Friday the Army Corps of Engineers, delivered a letter to Standing Rock Sioux tribal leader Dave Archambault that all federal lands north of the Cannonball River will be closed to public access beginning December 5 for "safety concerns". The agency says those who choose to stay do so at their own risk.

Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Chairman Dave Archambault II said late Monday the most risky thing would be to "force well-situated campers from their shelters and into the cold". They also believe the land near the confluence of the Missouri and Cannonball rivers is still rightfully owned by the Standing Rock Sioux under a almost 150-year-old treaty. North Dakota's governor ordered the expulsion of thousands of Native American and environmental activists camped on federal property near an oil pipeline project they are trying to halt, citing hazards posed by weather as a blizzard bore down on the area.

Obama, Trump spoke by phone amid transition whirlwind
His final press conference was loaded with Trump questions, not surprising given that American presidents hold so few of them. However, Obama said he would speak out if core United States "values and ideals" were threatened by the Trump Presidency.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe says construction of the pipeline - which is now slated to run under the Missouri River - could affect its drinking water supply and put communities living downstream "at risk for contamination by crude oil leaks and spills". Pipeline developer Energy Transfer Partners disputes that and says the 1,200-mile pipeline through the Dakotas, Iowa and IL will be safe. This is a clear stretch of state emergency management authority and a further attempt to abuse and humiliate the water protectors.

The camp is located on a slice of land at the confluence of the Cannonball and Missouri Rivers, and is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The current proposed route, however, would take it through four states, stretching 1,172 miles to connect areas with oil in North Dakota to southern IL.

Dalrymple's order, issued as Morton County was getting hit with a winter storm, states that emergency services will likely not be available to people who continue to camp in violation of the order. Construction has stalled as the Army Corps of Engineers engages in talks with Native American leaders.

Henderson said protesters can relocate to a "free speech zone" south of the river. More than 500 people have been arrested since the summer in sometimes violent clashes with local law enforcement, which has come under fierce criticism for what protesters say have been abusive tactics.

Bo Levi Mitchell, Stampeders lead West sweep of CFL awards
Campbell was the CFL's 2015 coach of the year and is a finalist for the honour this season with Dickenson. Mitchell and Jackson will be busy Sunday as Calgary faces Ottawa in the Grey Cup game at BMO Field.

While many Oregonians spent the Thanksgiving holiday eating large meals with their families, some drove hundreds of miles to feed the Standing Rock Sioux and their supporters in North Dakota.

But in a statement issued late Sunday, the Corps said it "has no plans for forcible removal".

LaDonna Brave Bull Allard, a Standing Rock Sioux tribe member and founder of the Sacred Stone camp, said that the governor did not have authority over the land and that the water protectors would not evacuate.

I am sure his hardline right-wing cabinet team will make sure of that and apparently Trump has close financial ties with Energy Transfer, the Texas company building the pipeline.
