British vegans not happy with "fatty" new £5 note

The Bank of England has admitted that the new polymer £5 notes contain animal fat, outraging many vegetarians and vegans.

The petition, titled - "Remove tallow from bank notes" - will be delivered to the Bank of England once it hits 15,000 signatures.

The 47-year-old hotel worker, who has been a vegan for 20 years, said he will "absolutely" be boycotting and "refusing" the new notes.

Mr Maw is also trying to set up a petition on the Government site to try to force a debate on the issue in Parliament.

"Why would a piece of money ever need to contain something from an animal? ridiculous. surely theres substitutes and materials that can do the exact same thing", said one supporter, Martha McCoss.

Ms Rox encouraged other vegan businesspeople to follow suit: "It would be incredible if every vegan business owner, or even those that care about animals, would stop using five pound notes".

China currency dips to lowest level versus dollar in 8 years
Even though the yuan has depreciated 6.2% against the US dollar this year, China's exports have not picked up (see chart). After the victory of Donald Trump on the United States presidential election yuan fell by 1.5% against the dollar.

However, there are alternatives to all of these, whereas £5 notes are a different matter - unless vegans and vegetarians start insisting on using coins for everything, that is. A further petition was created when it was announced that Winston Churchill would replace Elizabeth Fry on the face of the currency, meaning no English banknotes would feature women (apart from the queen).

The revelation came when the Bank of England replied to a question posed on Twitter, stating that "there is a trace of tallow in the polymer pellets used in the base substrate of the polymer £5 notes".

"Tallow is derived from animal fats (suet) and is a substance that is also widely used in the manufacture of candles and soap".
