Portman wins re-election to Senate seat

Portman easily defeated Democratic challenger Ted Strickland, the former OH governor, and returns to an even stronger Senate majority in Washington.

Portman's campaign kept Strickland on the defense running a well-funded campaign.

"Our country faces serious challenges, from the weak recovery and the middle-class squeeze, to an epidemic of drug addiction, to our growing national security threats", said Portman in his statement.

"They expect better. We are capable of better and with a fresh start there will never be a better moment than now to rise above the dysfunction in Washington, DC, and find that common ground". "Portman", Gerard Basalla, an intern with the Portman campaign, said.

Portman told reporters Wednesday that he doesn't believe his decision late in the race to withdraw support from Republican Donald Trump will hurt his relationship with the president-elect. "I will be voting for Mike Pence for President".

"I don't know that it will be a physical wall everywhere across the border, or whether you can do this with a virtual wall in certain areas where a wall might not be practical, but I do think people are going to generally support the idea of reforming our immigration system and ensuring that there is adequate enforcement", he said. "I have dedicated my life to working for working people because that's where I come from, that's who I care about, and that who I will always stand up for". I spoke with Senator Portman last night and congratulated him on his victory - we've worked together on everything from trade enforcement to algal blooms in Lake Erie to the opioid crisis - and I look forward to continuing our work to get things done for Ohio.

Rural voters, as expected, backed Trump by a wide margin. "I still believe that a lot of Republicans are very anxious today".

Exit polls showed Trump did well with men and whites while Clinton's support was strong among women and minorities around the state.

For his part, Mr. Strickland said the results were "not what I hoped for".
