Publix recalls ice cream due to possible listeria contamination

The problem is traced back to an ingredient supplied by Iowa-based Aspen Hills. Aspen Hills did not say the companies or states where the dough was sold.

Publix Premium Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream is being recalled due to possible contamination with listeria monocytogenes.

Although no traces of Listeria have been found in any of the cookie dough recalled most recently, the recalls are initiated as a precaution.

The consumer and food service products produced with the cookie dough pieces were distributed in the following states Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

"The reality for Blue Bell is they are going to have to perform above and beyond at least for the next several years where they don't have incidents or recalls and are trusted again by consumers and the federal government", Henning said, adding that ultimately it is Blue Bell's responsibility to ensure that its suppliers provide it with safe products. The company resumed selling its products about four months later.

In the wake of the current recall, Blue Bell said it continues to "refine our procedures, make additional physical enhancements in our facilities, and reinforce our employee training". Blue Bell said Wednesday that it is recalling packages of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

The dairy has told stores to pull the ice cream from their shelves. Those symptoms include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
