Zika spread through sex by symptom-free man

The Food and Drug Administration wants all USA blood centers to start screening for Zika, a major expansion meant to protect the nation's blood supply from the mosquito-borne virus.

"We continue to ask donors to self-defer or postpone their blood donation for four weeks if they are at risk of Zika virus exposure", Stramer said.

Bonfils said they have been pre-screening blood donors to see if they've recently traveled to an area where Zika is active, like parts of the Caribbean and South America - and Florida, which has more than 40 locally-transmitted Zika cases.

USA health officials on Friday reported the first case of Zika spread through sex by a man with no symptoms of the disease. Dr. Raoult Ratard, state epidemiologist said none of these cases are related to the recent flooding event.

"About 80% of people who have Zika may never have symptoms", Marks said.

Usain Bolt still the fastest man in the world
Usain Bolt began the latest leg of his " triple triple " bid with the easiest of victories in his 200m heat in Rio. I don't know who decided that schedule. "I was pretty shocked", Bolt said . "So I'm going to run with that one".

"There is still much uncertainty regarding the nature and extent of Zika virus transmission", said Peter Marks, director of the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research. They say they are now reviewing the new Zika testing guidelines. There have been almost 2,500 cases of Zika in the US linked to travel to outbreak areas.

In the other 21 US cases of sexual transmission, the virus was spread by someone who at some point had symptoms.

The mainland arrival of the Zika virus was publicly reported at the of July.

"The transfusion of a pregnant woman with blood infected with the Zika virus could have bad consequences", Peter Marks, director of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said during a conference call with reporters.

The French case involved a couple who had both traveled to Martinique, where Zika was active, and was discovered through a routine blood test a few months after their return.

Child bomber in Turkey not the only violent use of children
That attack was the latest in a series of terrorist acts in Turkey aimed at Kurish people and created to inflame ethnic tensions. Footage claiming to show Kurdish security forces remove a bomb belt from a teenager before defusing it has emerged online.

Friday's numbers brings the travel-related cases in Florida to 545 while non-travel related cases remain at 45.

Ziman said with the testing on top of the questioning already being done about people's travel histories to places where Zika is being spread, she believes the risk of getting Zika through a blood transfusion "is really low". Several blood centers have started screening for the virus voluntarily, including several in Texas.

DOH media and marketing manager Sarah Revell said, "Whenever a new case of Zika is confirmed, the county health department works closely with local mosquito control districts to ensure appropriate follow up occurs through spraying, searching for mosquito breeding areas and educating residents on how to protect themselves from mosquito bites".

Infection is a big concern for pregnant women.

In March, the FDA granted Roche approval for a clinical trial testing its Zika blood screening test in Puerto Rico, where local blood donations had been halted and blood had to be imported from the continental United States.
