NKorea claims success in submarine-launched missile test

The launch also comes at a time of intensified animosity between the rival Koreas over the defection of a senior North Korean diplomat in London and a US plan to install a sophisticated missile defense system in South Korea. Japanese officials said the USA missile deployment in South Korea and their ongoing joint military exercises were not mentioned at the trilateral talks.

North Korea fired a submarine-launched missile on Wednesday that flew about 500 km (311 miles) towards Japan, a show of improving technological capability for the isolated country that has conducted a series of launches in defiance of United Nations sanctions.

The foreign ministers of China, Japan and South Korea criticised North Korea's latest submarine missile test today during their annual talks that were held amid lingering frictions over territorial disputes and wartime history.

According the South Korean military, this is the longest flight by the missile of the kind for North Korea.

Charlotte Dujardin vows to marry her fiance after latest Olympic triumph
Trott has to potential to pull ahead and remain Britain's most-decorated female Olympian ever if she wins in the velodrome later. Britain's bronze medal count was also boosted after a third place in the hammer event by Sophie Hitchon in the Olympic stadium.

The trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers, their first since March 2015, comes as Tokyo, Seoul and Beijing have struggled to find common ground on how to deal with North Korea.

The UN Security Council scheduled urgent consultations on the latest test-firing, at the request of the United States and Japan. However, South Korea continues to maintain that these exercises are of a defensive nature. It has been angered by what it views as provocative moves by the United States and South Korea, including their July decision to base the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defence) anti-missile system in South Korea.

The missile flew 500 kilometres (around 300 miles) towards Japan, marking what weapons analysts called a clear step forward for North Korea's nuclear strike ambitions.

Earlier this month, North Korea fired a land-launched ballistic missile directly into Japanese-controlled waters for the first time, drawing an outraged response from Tokyo.

North Korea already has a variety of land-based missiles that can hit South Korea and Japan, including USA military bases in those countries. The missile was tracked over and into the Sea of Japan, around 480 kilometres off the coast of North Korea.

Australia wins shock gold in modern pentathlon
The smile stuck with her on the long walk to the medal stand, through presentations of bronze and silver, and onto the top step. Elodie Clouvel of France finished second and Nowacka, who was atop the leaderboard throughout the day, finshed third.

South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said the launch showed an "improvement" in ability over previous similar missile tests. "I hope to coordinate closely in order for Japan, China and South Korea to lead the efforts of the global community", he said.

The launch comes as South Korea and the US kicked off annual military drills Monday, which typically draws condemnation from North Korea.

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe called the launch an "impermissible and outrageous act" that poses a grave threat to Japan.

The DPRK usually responds to regular South Korea-U.S. military drills with weapons tests and fiery warlike rhetoric.
